Kandyan Dance is one of the three main classical dance styles in Sri Lanka. Originally composed and performed in the central highlands of the country, Through generations and many different lineages of teachers, Kandyan dance has evolved since to incorporate folktales, cultural and global influences and elements of creative performing arts. It is an energetic and dynamic style originally performed to the Drum called Gata Bera specifically designed for this style.
This 4 week block of classes introduces participants to the basics of the dance form, working with body and mind to move in formations unique to this style, to various combinations of drum beats. It strengthens the body through dynamic movements and posture, and strengthens the mind through creativity.
The class is taught by Kandyan dancer Tharanga Wicramasinghe. Thara is passionate about introduce this beautiful, dynamic and unique dance style in Scotland. Dancing with Thara, you will find yourself becoming physically and mentally fitter, while learning a new dance style, polishing your creative talent while having loads of fun.
