Folk at Heart is an invitation to enter a world of discovery and creativity. The Scottish Gallery has curated an uplifting, theatrical and imaginative exhibition combining fine, popular and applied artists to sit alongside self-taught and anonymous folk artists mixing contemporary and historical timelines. The Gallery does not attempt a definition of Folk Art but instead embraces the artist, the amateur, naïve and unpretentious – each artist leads the narrative from social history, decorative and useful to the subversive and grotesque. There is painting, printmaking, collage, ceramics, jewellery, basket weaving, quilting and embroidery alongside many curious and rare vintage finds. Folk at Heart explores the iconography of personal memory, pop-culture, myths and folk tales, practical design and the continuation of local traditions in all forms.
Folk Art has historically emerged from group activities that require shared resources and collaboration. Today, the tradition of artist collaboration continues. Folk at Heart sees artist and curator Mark Hearld join forces with Martin Clark from Tilley Printing to collaborate on the exhibition’s letterpress invitation, which also forms the graphic design for the exhibition’s catalogue by artist and designer Jonathan Christie. Other leading popular artists include Angie Lewin and Jonny Hannah.
The Tim Stead Trust has made available a very rare, magnificent four poster bed by the late sculptor and furniture maker Tim Stead (1952-2000). It is an extravagant, fantastical piece in burr elm, the last in a series of beds made between 1975 and 1995. The bed will be dressed in a beautiful ‘textile landscape’ quilt by Pauline Burbidge from the Scottish Borders, who is a direct contemporary of Stead, adding to the many artist links within the exhibition.
Folk at Heart brings affordable vintage finds into the curatorial mix, which sit alongside rare examples by fine artists such as an outstanding repousse metalwork of the Garden of Eden by Asiru Olatunde (1918-1993) and paintings by artists who are ripe for rediscovery including Gregoire Michonze (1902-1982), George Manchester (1922-1996) and Carel Weight (1908-1997). One exhibition highlight is an outstanding painting by one of the lesser-known Bloomsbury Group members, Margaret Kemplay Snowdon (1878-1965).
Christina Jansen, Managing Director of The Scottish Gallery, comments: "If the whole of human culture was explored in Neil Macgregor’s History of the World in 100 Objects, then Folk at Heart is an unapologetic assembly of ‘stuff’ which might do much the same for a few hundred years of creativity".
