Poetry & Pints Presents: Three Poets and a Singer

About Poetry & Pints Presents: Three Poets and a Singer

Poetry & Pints is a vibrant poetry reading series based in Leith, which was established in 2022. P&P has become a welcome home for some exciting new poetry and poets, and we're delighted to be able to share their work through the Scottish Poetry Library.

Come along and hear poems from Mark Lewis, Hermione Byron and Naomi Head, with songs from Moteh Parrott. The library bar (no...really) will be open all evening.

This is the first in what may be a regular series of events in collaboration with the SPL, where Poetry and Pints showcase the work of emerging writers alongside some well-known names in poetry and music.

About the performers

Moteh Parrott was born in Cameroon and given the local name ‘Mnkongmoteh’, Moteh Parrott is a Scottish alternative-indie artist whose music has been likened to “a Highland wilderness with all the sweeping colour and spirit which that encompasses” (leedsmusicscene.net). His music compliments reflective, uplifting lyrics with open-tuned electric guitar and cello. Shortlisted for BBC Radio Scotland’s Singer-Songwriter of the Year Award 2019, Moteh is currently working on his debut album at Chem19 studios with Paul Savage, producer of Mogwai, Arab strap and King Creosote, among other renowned Scottish artists.

Naomi Head writes across multiple genres. She has written for Bright Purple, Time Out Beijing, RED UNIT, Rave Child, The Scratched Record and more. Her poetry has been published by Sunday Mornings at the River, Scran Press, SNACK Mag and Beyond the Veil Press, and shared online by I AM LOUD and The Spit it Out Project. Naomi's food writing has been published by Dulcify Journal and Saalt Press.

Hermione Byron (she/they) is a poet and creative. She grew up in Ireland, and has also lived in England and Scotland. She currently resides in Leith and studies at Edinburgh Napier. Hermione had a poem engraved on a Wilfred Owen memorial statue in Shropshire after winning a county poetry competition. She has performed at Beyond Borders Festival and is looking forward to read at Duns Play Fest on 2nd May. Hermione has been published in the Typewronger poetry scroll 'Wrong Directions' and Outcrop magazine. She has recently self-published a zine called Twenty Three Debris which is available at Typewronger and Lighthouse Books. Her poetry reaches into the surreal as her words reveal a keen eye for unexpected metaphor and inventive wordplay. Her work explores themes such as apocalypse, culture and human nature.

Mark Lewis is an Edinburgh-based writer, originally from Wales. He writes Fantasy, Science Fiction and Horror, as well as poetry and has had several mini-pantomimes performed. He reads his work in public as much as humanly possible, including at spoken word nights such as Poetry & Pints, the Typewronger Open Mic, the Sad Song Club, Rock the Boat, Loud Poets Open Mic and the Poetry Alcove. He was a runner up in the 2022 Leith vs the World Story Slam and has a short story in the current Leither Magazine (available for free in many of the pubs of Leith!) and the new Leith Writings anthology the Seagull at the Shore
