Intro to Upcycled Bookbinding Course

About Intro to Upcycled Bookbinding Course

Each week we'll explore a different book structure, incorporating fabric, leather/pleather, beads, buttons, decorative and vintage papers. With the last class reserved for adding finishing touches to our books and celebrating our creations over a well deserved cuppa! 6 class course £180 with bookbinding toolkit included, or £35 per class if you can't attend all 6.

This course is suitable if you’re a complete beginner or if you have dabbled in bookbinding before – everyone is welcome! The wonderfully addictive craft of bookbinding goes hand in hand with lots of other crafts too, so if you’re a printer, writer, stitcher or paper crafter it is likely that you already have lots of materials just waiting to become books – let me show you how!

The books we will make in this course can be used as notebooks, sketchbooks, journals and Artists’ Books as well as offering a way to collate and display artwork/writing. Handmade books also make for great presents – throughout the course we will explore different ways of personalising your books and giving them a theme so each one has its own unique character.

This course includes the following book structures:

>16 May: Japanese stab binding
>23 May: Exposed long stitch binding
>30 May:Concertina book
>6 June: V stitch binding
>13 June: Mini Casebound book
>20 June: Finishing touches

The classes will be held in the fabulous Ink on Mesh Print Studio, The Heart of Newhaven, 4-6 main Street, Edinburgh, EH6 4HY (on the 7, 10, 11 & 16 bus route), with colourful artwork on the walls and kettle on hand for tea and coffee top ups to fuel your creativity! My studio is just down the hall so there will also be an opportunity to visit Bookbinding with Cass HQ and explore my collection of handmade books.

All tools, materials and refreshments are included in the cost of the course with the option to purchase a bookbinding toolkit which provides everything you need to continue your bookbinding journey at home.

My mission is to make the craft of bookbinding fun and accessible, so you can expect a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere, lot’s of one-to-one guidance, an opportunity to connect with other crafty folk and techniques that you can replicate easily at home without the need for expensive tools and materials.

A series of follow up video tutorials and list of recommended suppliers is also included in the cost of this course – a great resource that you can refer back to again and again for a reminder of the stitching techniques and where to source materials for future bookbinding projects.

Attending a creative workshop can be a great way to spend time with a crafty pal – invite someone to join you on the 6 class course and use my special ‘bring a friend’ discount, book two places (for you and a friend) and use the following code to get £10 off: BaFdiscount

> If you would like to join this course but the cost is a barrier to you, please get email me at bookbindingwithcass@gmail.com as I am able to offer one place at half price (£90). Please note, this will be issued on a first come first served basis and will be kept confidential.

Please note:
>Ink on Mesh Print Studio is up two flights of stairs and is not wheelchair accessible.
>I require a minimum of 6 bookings to go ahead with this workshop. I will give you advanced warning if the workshop has to be cancelled and offer you a full refund or the option to swap to another date.
>Payment is confirmation of your booking, refunds are not possible unless in extreme circumstances.
