The UK Chess Challenge, proudly sponsored by Delancey, first took place in 1996 and has since grown into one of the largest junior chess tournaments in the world. The beauty of the event is that it welcomes all-comers from players competing in their first tournament to national champions. There is nothing quite like this in the world of chess. It is open to school age players (born after 31st August 2004) who will compete in 6 rounds of chess throughout the day. The strongest players will qualify for the Gigafinals. This year, the first ever Scottish Gigafinal is going to be held in Edinburgh in June. At the Gigafinal players compete for places at the grand final, The Terafinal, that is held at Blenheim Palace in October.
There are five age-group sections (under 8s, under 10s, under 12s, under 14s, under 18s). Players play in their age group throughout each stage of the competition.
Each stage gets progressively harder with only the top junior players reaching the super-strong Terafinal. Prizes are available at each stage with the eventual winners being crowned UK Schools’ Chess Champions.
Entries close on 24th March or when we reach capacity. No entries on the day.
Location: Broughton High School, 9 East Fettes Avenue, Edinburgh, EH4 1EG
