In our tasting, we will look at what whisky is, why it originated, some whisky history, the different regions and the different flavours associated with each. We will taste six different single malts and provide some information about each of the producing distilleries, some of which will explain the sources of the flavours within each whisky.
Hosted by John Lamond - The whisky expert other experts often turn to.
A Master of Malt and Keeper of the Quaich, John is one of the world's leading authorities on Whisky. He is the author of “The Malt Whisky File” (now into its seventh edition), “The Whisky Connoisseur’s Book of Days”, “The Whisky Connoisseur’s Companion”, “Le Snob Whisky” and “Instant Expert Whisky”, and he contributes to international consumer magazines, as well as European drinks industry journals on the wider subject of “drink”.
With a family background in hotels and retail, he was inspired aged 23, whilst working for its owner Dewar’s, by a sample of cask strength whisky from the Aberfeldy distillery - he never looked back, and a natural thirst for knowledge put him into a lifetime's love affair with Scotland's 'water of life'.
John writes and lectures extensively, calling on his broad experience, not just in whisky, but also in wine and other spirits. With over forty-eight years’ experience in the drinks industry, he has served on the National Council of the Association of Wine Educators, is a Past President of the Institute of Wines & Spirits of Scotland and holds the Miguel Torres Wines Course Award, The Australian Wine Certificate and The Wine & Spirit Education Trust Diploma. A valued lecturer on WSET courses up to Diploma level, he conducts training sessions throughout the world for distillers, drinks distributors, hoteliers, restaurateurs and bar owners and their staffs and private clients.
John is the creator of The Scotch Whisky Trail Certificate Course, “the world’s first Scotch Whisky evening class”. Run under the auspices of The Scotch Whisky Academy, a worldwide training and assignment body, it covers Scotch Whisky’s production, history and folklore, its marketing and its future. Popular demand caused him to add The Advanced Whisky Trail Course, going even deeper into the subject and giving the students a far wider insight into the industry than any other course available.
In his spare time John is an enthusiastic campaigner for the environment, Fairtrade, local community causes and his family.
“I truly believe and preach that Scotch Whisky is the world’s premier spirit: nowhere else in the spirit world can you experience such diverse flavours and such degrees of maturity for such a small cost. I find this diversity, both of flavours and of the people involved in the industry exciting, friendly and, very often, also humbling.”
