IberoDocs - Edinburgh

About IberoDocs - Edinburgh

The festival offers a carefully selected programme of the latest and most relevant documentaries from Spain, Portugal and Latin America, plus a string of events designed to connect communities in celebration of rich cultures.

IberoDocs X features six feature-length documentaries from Argentina, Brazil, Cape Verde, Panama, Portugal, and Spain, and two short films made by Scotland-based filmmakers. The screenings will represent the Scottish premiere of all films (except I Miss Hugs), including two UK premieres (One Day Lobo Lopez; For Your Peace, Build Your Own Museum) and one international premiere (Infinities). The festival will feature several in-person and Zoom Q&As with international filmmakers. Each feature film will screen once in each city.

Built around the theme of ‘reconnecting’, the programme features places undergoing major transformation and people who embody the spirit of community. Its films are exuberant yet insightful; they celebrate women with unwavering resilience, artists who have shared their souls despite adversity, and characters made stronger by their flaws.

IberoDocs X will begin on 21st February with the Scottish premiere of The Castle (2023, dir. Martín Benchimol) at Cameo Picturehouse, Edinburgh—an event produced in partnership with Cinetopia:DOC. The Castle observes the nuances of a mother-daughter relationship shaped in part by the disparities of Argentinian society. It won the Horizontes Latinos Award at the 71st San Sebastián International Film Festival, 2023.

Winner of the Indie Lisboa Audience Award, 2022, Cesária Évora (2022, dir. Ana Sofia Fonseca) features unseen footage of the Cape Verdean morna singer for whom it is named. Screenings in both cities will be accompanied by live singing performances from Giulia Drummond.

In Edinburgh on 1st March, Miúcha, the Voice of Bossa Nova (2022, dir. Liliane Mutti and Daniel Zarvos) will be followed by an in-person Q&A with its Brazilian filmmakers as well as a performance by the Edinburgh-based bossa nova band Fingertraps. Daniel Zarvos, who is the cousin of Miúcha, has had access to intimate archive footage of the star. He and his co-director, Liliane Mutti, will also be joined by Miguel Gonçalves Mendes (dir. José and Pilar) for Behind the Lens: Crafting Intimate Portraits, an in-person panel discussion produced in partnership with the Scottish Documentary Institute.

Fans of Portuguese literature will enjoy José and Pilar (2010, dir. Miguel Gonçalves Mendes), a portrait of the relationship between the Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago and his wife, Pilar del Rio, featuring footage of Gael García Bernal and Gabriel García Márquez. Both screenings will be BSL interpreted. The director will join the Edinburgh event at McDonald Road Library for a conversation with IberoDocs. Here, audiences will be invited to browse a selection of works by the author, all available to borrow.

Short film pairings invite filmmakers from across the world to explore the relationships between their films. The UK premiere of For Your Own Peace, Make Your Own Museum (Pilar Moreno, 2021) will screen alongside the international premiere of Infinities (2023), a short film by Lucas Melián Batista, an Edinburgh-based filmmaker from the Canary Islands. In Glasgow, The Castle will be joined by I Miss Hugs (2021), a stop motion short from Glasgow-based filmmaker, Ana Songel.

IberoDocs X also offers many opportunities to connect joyfully with others, including conversations with filmmakers and expert-led workshops in screen printing, filmmaking, dance, and Afro-Latin percussion. The festival will close on 2nd March with the UK premiere of One Day Lobo Lopez (2023, Alejandro Salgado), the story of Kiko Veneno’s hit album, ‘Échate un cantecito’, at Lost in Leith. The event will continue until 1am as a dance party with live music from Edinburgh-based psychedelic cumbia band Cumbiatones and DJ sets from Exterior and Ma’Jawell.

“IberoDocs is about bringing people together. It gives us all a chance to look at the world through another person’s eyes—even visit another part of the world. But even better, it lets us connect with so many unique people in our own communities as we come together to appreciate these rich cultures. We are all so excited to bring the festival back to Edinburgh and Glasgow for its tenth edition this year.” - Mar Felices, Founder/Director
