Enjoy Spacewomen, Satellite's Eye View, Gendering AI, Computer Says Oh No!, and How to Handle a Pandemic, which explore a wide range of science topics – from gender and space, to technology and the pandemic.
Spacewomen:
Nearly 60 years after the first woman was launched into orbit, we're on the cusp of an exciting new space age. To mark this new dawn for women and the galaxy, Space Shetland’s Yvette Hopkins chairs a special discussion that brings together women working in the space industry from across the world to share their career experiences and hopes for the future. Featuring space medic Christina Mackaill, astronautical engineer Cassandra Mercury and Rocket Women founder Vinita Marwaha Madill.
Satellite's Eye View:
Thousands of miles above our heads, a flotilla of human-made satellites are orbiting our planet, collecting information and beaming it back. But don't worry, these satelites aren't watching over us like Big Brother. They are busy mapping, monitoring and relaying data and are integral to connecting the globe and combating climate change. Join experts Sonali Mohapatra, Paula McGregor and Katie Miller for an explanation of how we can best use this space-gathered data to help us confront one of the biggest challenges faced by Earth.
Gendering AI: – The Case of Conversational Assistants
With many voice assistants carrying out obedient, subservient roles it's thought that this – along with their design of female-gendered names, voices, and personas – can encourage abusive language toward them. AI expert Kate Devlin, BBC design team member Fiona Linton-Forrest and author Mark West rally together to discuss issues surrounding gender and conversational assistants, and what can be done to combat them. They'll also discuss their work as part of a major research project currently being carried out on mitigating gender-based harms in conversational AI.
Computer Says Oh No!:
Software reliability is not simply a question of consumer inconvenience and business priorities; it has economic, social and cultural consequences. So what is it about software systems that led to these failures? What are the moral and practical implications for those involved in software development? In this Sidney Michaelson Memorial Lecture, author and software consultant Kevlin Henney explores mistakes in software, its application and how they affect the different levels of our society.
How to Handle the Pandemic:
Governments around the world have deployed a range of strategies to steer their nations through the crisis but who got it right? This event brings together international experts – who have advocated different approaches – to attempt to find out how to handle a pandemic. Hosted by Director of the UK's Emerging Infections Research Unit Tom Solomon, this keynote discussion features Chair of the WHO’s Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network Dale Fisher, behavioural scientist and Scottish government advisor Linda Bauld and epidemiologist Tim Spector.
