What happened after the '45
As the smoke began to clear across the battlefield at Culloden on the 16th April 1746 it seemed that Jacobitism as a military threat and a political movement had been dealt a fatal blow. Yet the next 150 years saw the strange transformation of the Jacobite cause into a powerful and enduring assemblage of culture, ideas, myth and memory.
This talk will take us on a journey from the devastation of Culloden Moor to the glens of Appin; from the courtroom at Inveraray to the sumptuous palazzo and cathedrals of Rome; from the plantations of the ante bellum US south to the hunting lodges of the late-Victorian Highlands – tracing the twilight and transformation of Jacobitism.
