About Scotland’s Gardens Scheme Open Garden: Eskbank Village Gardens

A trail offering a range of varied gardens, large and small. Trail start and plant sale will be at 23 Lasswade Road.

23 Lasswade Road EH22 3EE (Kate Fearnley & Maruska Greenwood): A third of an acre, with beautiful mature planting including a range of trees, rhododendrons and azaleas. Bearded irises and peonies a feature of early summer. Bees and insects encouraged with lots of colour, small pond full of wildlife. We grow vegetables and fruit and garden organically, making our own compost and leaf mold.

18 Dundas Road EH22 3EL (Edward and Mary McMillan): Detached bungalow with south-facing front lawn bordered by trees, shrubs and seasonal flowers. Rear garden has trees, shrubs, a rose border, ornamental pond, summer house, greenhouse and vegetable plot, fruit trees and bushes; also a small, secluded 'Japanese' garden.

20 Dalhousie Road (NEW) EH22 3AL (Kenneth Hyslop): Productive veg and flowers.
5 Melville Terrace (NEW) EH22 3AR (Annette Henderson): This small walled garden is hidden away within a Victorian terrace with the only access a garden gate, and is shaded by trees. A mix of shade tolerant David Austin roses, geraniums, tree peonies and hydrangeas are the mainstay.

61 Eskbank Road EH22 3BU (Tim Rideout): A little of the Western Cape in Scotland. Moderate sized garden with a rich variety of plants. I have a connection with Cape Town after living there for ten years so put much effort into growing Western Cape plants, including Widdringtonia cedarbergensis, a CITES Red Book species and some of the only examples in the Northern Hemisphere.
We hope other gardens will join us - please check the website.

Directions: Lothian Buses 3, 49, 140. Borders bus X95. Train: to Eskbank Station, 15m walk. Car: from A7 take A768 (Lasswade Road) towards Dalkeith. Number 23 is on the right, after Larkfield Road, middle of three white houses. From Dalkeith take A768 from Justinlees roundabout, number 23 is on the left, after Dundas Crescent.
