Saxophonist Matt Carmichael is one of the UK’s brightest young jazz talents.
A finalist in the BBC Young Jazz Musician 2020, Matt released his debut album, Where Will the River Flow in March to rave notices internationally including a five-star review in BBC Music Magazine and an Album of the Month award from Munich-based public radio station BR Klassik.
Now twenty-two and soon to graduate from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he began playing saxophone at school in East Dunbartonshire and by his mid-teens he was showing extraordinary poise as a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra of Scotland.
Saxophonist Tommy Smith presently invited him to join his youth jazz orchestra and as Matt’s course leader at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, he has since described him as “better than I was at that age”.
Here Matt joins the award-winning Playtime quartet to play tunes from his debut album and more.
