About Manipulate Festival - The Yellow Canary

This event is a part of SNAPSHOTS, a strand of programming at MANIPULATE that presents works-in-progress at various stages of their development.

When Bernard, a young Jewish boy, is forced to leave his home city of Paris with just his parents and his pet canary for company, a dangerous journey in search of safety begins. The Yellow Canary is both an epic true story and a leap into the imagination of a young child desperate to escape the horrors of war, exploring love, loss and what it means to flee your home. It is a show for all ages comprising storytelling and animation and will be performed live, for an online audience.

Age 12+

This work in progress is the second development of The Yellow Canary and brings together performance maker Tashi Gore with visual theatre expert Ross MacKay and playwright Will Gore to work in a new digital format.

Tashi Gore is a performance maker, producer and consultant who has worked in Theatre for 16 years. She is Associate Director at Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre and is co-artistic director of multi award winning Glas(s) Performance, an arts company that makes innovative performance work with individuals, families and communities. She is co-founder of young people’s performance collective Junction 25, which was at Tramway until 2019 and Polmont Youth Theatre at HMYOI Polmont, the first ever youth theatre for young offenders in Scotland.

Will Gore is a London-based playwright who is associate artist with Wassail Theatre. He is a graduate of the Royal Court Young Writers Programme and completed an MA in Writing for Performance at Goldsmiths University. His play, Facegone, was performed at Oran Mor for A Play, A Pie and A Pint, while Portman Avenue, ran at the Orange Tree Theatre as part of the collaborative production, Unrivalled Landscape. His work has also been performed at Soho Theatre, Theatre 503, New Diorama and the Arcola.

Ross MacKay is a theatre maker with work that has appeared in over 10 countries and 100 different cities across the globe. He has worked as a director, puppeteer and a magician. Sometimes, he is a blend of all three. He is currently artistic director of the multi-award winning theatre company, Tortoise in a Nutshell which he co-founded in 2010. The company has toured throughout the world with its work.
