Italian singer Michael Alicchi from Modena was crowned the first-ever Wonderwall World Champion in Edinburgh, winning with a swagger-filled performance just hours before Oasis played their sell-out Murrayfield gig.
The one-day sing-off at Stockbridge Social, powered by Innis & Gunn, drew contestants from Scotland, Italy, and the US, with every entrant receiving a pint of Innis & Gunn Lager Beer.
Alicchi’s prize – a six-foot “Wonderwall” of Innis & Gunn beer – will now be making its way to Italy.
As Oasis geared up to rock Murrayfield on Saturday night, a packed Stockbridge Social drew what felt like the capital’s second biggest crowd of the weekend for the inaugural Wonderwall World Championships – powered by Innis & Gunn – attracting entrants from all around the world, from Gorgie to Glasgow and Tuscany to Texas.
Italian Michael Alicchi, from Modena in Italy, slid away with the top prize after wowing judges with a supersonic performance and now signature Liam Gallagher swagger. He takes home the ultimate prize – a six-foot “Wonderwall” of Innis & Gunn beer – which will now make its way to Italy.
Hosted by A View from the Terrace’s Craig Telfer, the one-day open-mic showdown gave Oasis wannabes the chance to belt out the Britpop anthem just hours before the real Gallagher brothers played the second of three sold-out Murrayfield gigs.
Craig Telfer said: “Whatever you think about Wonderwall, this gig was like Oasis at Knebworth – but with more pints and (maybe) fewer flares. Honestly, I’ve seen karaoke nights in all corners of Scotland, but this was on another level – at one point I thought Liam had nipped down early.
“To stand by me up there and go let it out like that – he was electric, so let there be plenty of love for this guy. Some might say it was the best rendition heard in the capital all weekend. If you disagree, let’s talk tonight.”
Dougal Sharp, Founder and Master Brewer at Innis & Gunn, said: “Wonderwall has been part of the soundtrack to so many of our lives, so to celebrate the Gallaghers’ return to Edinburgh with a world championship sing-off felt like the perfect way to bring people together over great beer and great music.
“Michael’s performance will live forever in all our memories. He absolutely nailed it from the voice to the unmistakable Gallagher swagger. He had a masterplan and rolled with it – he was a force of nature. Those who lost shouldn’t look back in anger though, they lost to a better man.”
The event was free to enter, with every contestant receiving a pint of Innis & Gunn Lager Beer.
Stockbridge Social, Edinburgh’s new outdoor food and drink market, is powered by Innis & Gunn and features award-winning traders including Cromars fish and chips, Flame to Fork steak frites, and Wanderers Kneaded pizza.
