Gift Green: POTR pots make festive debut at John Lewis
AN INNOVATIVE self-watering origami plant pot, which has proven hugely popular with over a hundred department stores across Japan, has arrived at John Lewis - just in time for Christmas.

POTR, the Scottish start-up behind the world’s first origami self-watering plant pot, will run a pop-up at the John Lewis Edinburgh store in St James Quarter until November 24.
The sustainable Scottish startup was named Sustainable Garden Product of the Year at this year’s Chelsea Flower show by The Royal Horticultural Society, the UK’s leading gardening charity.
Earlier this year, POTR sealed a major distribution deal which saw the brand stocked in hundreds of department stores across Japan, where it’s believed the art of paper folding began to flourish more than 1,000 years ago.
The POTR pot and vase, which can both be posted flat-packed through a letterbox, has proved popular – and founder Andrew Flynn thinks the product will go down a treat in the UK this Christmas.
Andrew Flynn, founder of POTR, said: “We’ve been hard at work transforming John Lewis Edinburgh into an urban jungle just in time for Christmas. This marks our very first physical presence in the department store, and it will only be available for a few days.
“POTR pots make for perfect stocking fillers: they offer the gift of growing, even for those without a green thumb. Plus, being flatpack, they’re incredibly easy to slip into a stocking!”
Designed and produced in Glasgow and Bristol, POTR’s standard range is made from recycled polypropylene and recycled cotton that would have otherwise ended up in landfill.
Since POTR first introduced the world to its self-watering origami plant pots in 2019, POTR has gone on to grow a global following.
POTR products are posted via letterbox for low carbon footprint delivery. Their latest pots use 30% less material than previous designs and over 90% less material compared with traditional plant pots.
The vase, which launched last year, includes a copper stem which is inspired by the centuries-old hack of using 1 or 2p coins to keep flowers fresh, healthy and alive.
