Edinburgh’s popular Neapolitan pizza restaurant, MATTO, will open its third site, on bustling Newington Road, and is offering free pizzas to the first 500 customers to celebrate this Thursday 30th November from 12pm until they’re gone.
MATTO Pizza opened its first pizzeria in Edinburgh’s Meadowbank in 2020, quickly gaining huge popularity for its authentic Neapolitan-style pizzas and becoming one of Edinburgh’s top takeaways on Deliveroo . In 2021, its second site opened in Morningside, a 44-seater restaurant with a large outdoor terrace, in one of the city’s most sought-after neighbourhoods.
The new site will be the largest of their three restaurants, seating up to 66 people. The spacious restaurant will boast vintage-style interiors, such as intricate wallpaper designs, with green, pink and gold accents throughout. A blanket of vibrant flowers decorates the ceiling, and large skylights flood the venue with natural light. The centrepiece is a stunning gold mirrored pizza oven, and an open kitchen for diners to watch the chefs at work. The interiors have been designed by the MATTO team, to create a dynamic and engaging space, which will continue to bring MATTO’S unique character to life and showcase its innovative approach to pizza.
MATTO has become a firm favourite amongst city centre residents for its unique take on the classic Neapolitan pizza. They use state-of-the-art wood-fired ovens that cook pizzas in just 60 seconds, and they use a natural risen dough made with 00 flour. Their pizza chefs create all pizzas from scratch using the best, most fresh ingredients, including San Marzano tomatoes and Fior di Latte Mozzarella DOP as standard. They are also renowned for their creativity and the new Newington menu will feature firm favourites including: truffle cream base with smoked scamorza, mushroom and rocket; white base with provolone cheese, salamino Toscano, friarielli and chilli flakes; tomato base with mozzarella, aubergine, grilled artichoke, basil, garlic, olive oil and parmesan, and; tomato base with mozzarella, spianata, nduja, ricotta, basil and black pepper.
The wines across all three MATTO pizzerias are supplied by Bellissimo Vino Edinburgh, and can’t be found anywhere else in the city. Each wine is carefully selected to complement each pizza and dish on the menu, and the MATTO team are always happy to talk guests through their recommendations.
Co-owner Nel from MATTO Pizza, said:
“We are really excited to be opening our third restaurant in Newington. When we launched MATTO, just three years ago, our vision was to create tasty Neapolitan-style pizzas that, while being innovative and fun, had absolutely no compromise on the quality of the ingredients. It has been a labour of love from day one and to now have three sites across Edinburgh feels like a huge accomplishment. I want to extend a huge thanks to our loyal customers - we really wouldn’t be where we are without your support.
We hope to welcome old and new customers to the new restaurant, so we can showcase MATTO’s creativity and hospitality”.
To celebrate the launch, MATTO will offer the first 500 customers a free takeaway pizza on 30th November, and the restaurant is set to open on 1st December for dinner service, with regular service (12pm-10pm) commencing on the 2nd. Follow Matto on Instagram for all updates @matto_pizza
MATTO pizza is due to open at the end of November. It will operate a walk-in only policy.
