In the week that Scotland emerged as the pie eating capital of Britain, with as many as 12% of Scots admitting to eating at least two pies each week,* one of the country’s top producers is revealing the secrets of its success.
Founded in 1945, Aldi’s long-term supplier, Brownings The Bakers has been making the humble pie for generations. Today, it produces over 100,000 pies each week in order to keep up demand from hungry Scots.
The Ayrshire based baker, which cites Aldi Scotland as its largest stockist, is preparing for its 10th appearance at the Royal Highland Show, where it will showcase four different types of pies, and an assortment of other baked goods, at the Aldi Scotland marquee.
As one of the country’s most popular producers, Brownings The Bakers knows exactly what is takes to make a good pie, and believes its success lies in the quality of ingredients used for the pastry and the filling. Sourcing only the best flour, meat and vegetables, Brownings The Bakers places a huge emphasis on attention to detail going through multiple different recipes to get the perfect texture and taste.
John Gall, MD of Brownings The Bakers said: “I can quite believe that Scots eat more pies than anywhere else in Britain. Over the past two decades, the demand for our products has continued to rise, and we’ve had to expand our premises and staffing just to keep up.
“The perfect pie should have a delicate but slightly crunchy puff pastry, with a succulent filling, which can be either meat, vegetables or even macaroni. What’s not to like? It’s entirely understandable that the humble pie has been a Scottish staple for generations.”
Available across Aldi Scotland’s 102 stores at everyday amazing prices, its line up for The Royal Show includes The Famous Kilmarnock Pie (£1.59, 150g), Specially Selected Steak and Ale Pie (£2.19, 250g); Specially Selected Chicken, Leek & Ham Pie with Arran Mustard (£2.19, 250g) and Specially Selected Three Cheese Macaroni Pie (£1.69, 250g); as well as Authentic Scottish Plain Scones (£0.85, 4 pack); Authentic Scottish Pancakes (£0.79, 4 pack); and Authentic Scottish Potato Scones (£0.89, 6 pack).
John Gall continued: “This is our 10th year at The Royal Highland Show. It is a very important event in our calendar, where we get to share our recipes with thousands of food lovers. The sampling opportunities are fantastic, and we always see an uptake in sales following the event.

Brownings will join 21 other Scottish suppliers at Aldi Scotland’s marquee this summer, where the value supermarket will showcase its biggest presence to date at The Royal Highland Show. Returning to Ingliston, Edinburgh on 23 June after a two-year hiatus, the event will celebrate its 200th anniversary.
