Photography partnership continues brewer’s history of creative collaborations designed to help showcase Innis & Gunn’s credentials as a global pioneer of barrel-aged brewing.
Innis & Gunn, the UK’s most recommended beer brand, has collaborated with photographer Olivier Barjolle to mark the launch of the latest limited-release beer: Quarter Cask Edition. The Scottish Brewer has teamed up with London-based Olivier to commission and collaborate on a photography series which explores the connection between the cask and beer. The partnership continues a long line of creative collaborations, which started with 2019’s ‘Project Ampersand’ initiative – a platform which celebrated the brand’s s flagship beer ‘The Original’ and the unique barrel-aging process Innis & Gunn uses to create it, through a series of collaborations with some of the UK’s leading designers and tastemakers.
Quarter Cask Edition is the latest release in the brand’s Explorer Editions range; a collection of premium, highly original beers. For their first ever ‘Quarter Cask’ release Innis & Gunn have reimagined their signature beer - The Original – through maturation in 120 highly prized ex-single malt whisky quarter casks. When used correctly, cask maturation provides a greater complexity and depth of flavour to the finished beer. After 70 days in the hand selected quarter casks, Quarter Cask Edition has an unrivalled depth of flavour, with fragrant hints of vanilla, pear and spice alongside a mellow, malty backbone.
To celebrate the launch of Quarter Cask Edition, Olivier’s approach saw him explore the beer by studying the details of the quarter cask both inside and outside his studio. He focused on the core element of the quarter cask – the oak itself – and sought to capture this in an innovative way. He has both deconstructed and amplified the elements of the oak – the acorn, the leaf, the bark and the wood grain – to create interesting, textural images that provide a different dimension to the beer itself. The images brought the project full circle by synthesising the beer with the oak tree.
Dougal Gunn Sharp, Founder and Master Brewer at Innis & Gunn, said: “Maturation of beer in cask is the reason that Innis & Gunn started out in the first place – it set us apart as true originals in the world of beer - so we’re huge advocates of the process itself and the fantastic flavours that it can create. Quarter Cask Edition is a perfect example of what can be achieved when beer and cask come together. It tastes truly delicious and we cannot wait for our drinkers to give it a try.
“Olivier has done a fantastic job in exploring the cask maturation process in such a unique way. His photographs are stunning and far from expected and we’re pleased to welcome him in to our family of creative collaborations that we kicked off so successfully last year with Project Ampersand. Working with creatives in this way is always fantastic as they see our beers through such a different lens; like the beer, we also hope you love the images as much as we do.”
Olivier Barjolle, London-based photographer, said: "I thoroughly enjoyed working on this collaboration for Innis & Gunn's new limited edition beer Quarter Cask. It was such an interesting challenge as the cask maturation is what makes the beer so unique. For this reason I decided to focus on the oak and after scouting for some amazing looking oak trees, I photographed the portraits at night. I applied various techniques which enabled me to capture the tree in such a unique way. Having complete freedom to interpret this however I wanted was fantastic and I hope I’ve done it justice!"
Quarter Cask Edition is Innis & Gunn’s fourth limited edition release this year. It follows Islay Whisky Cask and Rye Whiskey Cask beers, as well as the brand’s 100-day matured Scrubs Lager Beer. This year also marks the return of the brewer’s hugely popular Vanishing Point, with the fourth instalment of the beer to be released very soon.
Quarter Cask Edition will available from the Innis & Gunn Online store from Monday 26th October priced at £4.95 per 330ml bottle.
