New grave-robbery themed ‘escape room’ set to bring a dark and intriguing period of Edinburgh’s history back to life.

Located on the edge of Edinburgh's old surgical district, ‘The Anatomist’ is a brand-new escape room that invites you to descend into a world of grave robbery, mystery and malpractice, as you enter the study of a 19th century anatomist.
The first project by local, Edinburgh venture Escape ThePast, The Anatomist has been compared to an interactive version of the hugely popular Surgeons' Hall Museum. Groups of up to 6 people will be challenged to solve a series of puzzles within an hour as a thrilling mystery unfolds.
The story takes place shortly after the Burke & Hare murders, at a time when Edinburgh was one of Europe’s centres of medical learning. While the plot itself is a work of historical fiction, the setting and themes have been designed to maximise realism, including contemporary props and informative and gory details…
How has Dr Malcolm been procuring bodies for dissection? What research takes place here late into the night? And what terrible 'crime' did his assistant witness that caused him to flee in fear? Dr Malcolm's journal will reveal all, if you can find it before he returns...
Located in the basement of the Methodist Church at 25 Nicolson Square, The Anatomist will appeal to escape room lovers, but also those interested in Edinburgh’s history.
Founder and Edinburgh resident Chris Wood said:
“Escape Rooms are a great opportunity for immersive story-telling. With ‘The Anatomist’, we’re involving multiple senses, live acting and special effects to bring the story and this period of Edinburgh’s history to life. Hopefully inspiring people to learn more about it”.
The business will be following Covid secure guidelines including enhanced cleaning between groups and limiting the number of groups per day. Due to the mature nature of the theme there is a minimum age limit of 14 years.
