Scottish sporting star, LAURA MUIR, has taken time out from her Olympic preparations this week to pay a visit to a local Comic Relief funded project supported by money raised by Sport Relief, Edinburgh-based Venture Trust. The much- loved campaign encourages people to be active, and to help raise life changing money through the power of sport. The donations are used to support people living incredibly tough lives, in the UK and around the world. Since last Sport Relief, some of the money raised has helped support 127 Scottish organisations.
The Team GB star visited the leading youth work charity, which was set up to support vulnerable young people. The project uses sport activities in a wilderness environment to address the complex needs of young people whose challenging backgrounds have led to them experiencing, or being at risk of experiencing, homelessness. These outdoor pursuits are used as a tool to promote personal development, and grow the life-skills necessary for sustainable, positive futures. The grant will pay for project staff, residential costs and contribute to the organisation's overheads.
Following her visit, Laura said: “It was an absolute honour for me to visit Venture Trust in support of Sport Relief. I witnessed first-hand the amazing work this organisation is doing for communities and young people in Edinburgh. I have grown up with Sport Relief and it’s great to see the work it helps to make possible.”
Muir spent the afternoon speaking to a group of young people who are assisted by Venture Trust, exchanging stories and past experiences. Reflecting on how sport can be a positive impact for so many, Laura said: “Sport is such a powerful thing, it is a universal language, and it can be such an important tool in improving people’s lives. We all know sport is very good for us physically, but it can be equally beneficial to us mentally, and can give people a break from life’s harder challenges. I’m calling on the Scottish public to get involved in Sport Relief 2020 in any way that they can, as their assistance can truly make a difference to those who need it.”
