Edinburgh care home helps town become Dementia Friendly

A care home in Edinburgh is helping to create a dementia-friendly community.
On Thursday 20th February, from 2pm-4pm, local people are invited to attend Care UK’s Murrayside care home, on South Beechwood for a Dementia Friends session.
The Alzheimer’s Society’s “Dementia Friends” programme is an initiative to change people’s perceptions of dementia, raising awareness and understanding of the condition. It aims to transform the way the nation thinks, acts and talks about it.
Dementia specialist, Elizabeth Campbell, from Alzheimer Scotland, will be covering a number of topics to help people understand what it is like to live with dementia. There will also be support and practical advice on what dementia is and how memories are lost, as well as useful tips on how to overcome communication barriers and discover positive approaches to living with dementia.
The team at Murrayside will also be on hand throughout the afternoon to help visitors discover the small things they can do to make a difference to people living with dementia in the community.
Fran Long, home manager at Murrayside, said: “At Murrayside we are committed to encourage others to learn about dementia, and we are really proud of the progress we have made by supporting “Dementia Friends”. We want to educate people, but also help the community turn their knowledge into action by making our community more aware of those living with dementia.
“We look forward to welcoming the community into our home to learn more at our Dementia Friends session.”
Murrayside care home has been specially designed to enable residents to live active and fulfilled lives, while also promoting independence. The care home incorporates space for hobby and leisure activities, and has its own cinema, hair salon and café.
