Dippy, the Natural History Museum London’s famous diplodocus, stands resplendent at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum in Glasgow. The eagerly awaited Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure opened on Tuesday 22 January. On Saturday and Sunday Dippy greeted more than 24,000 people entering the Centre Hall, the largest number of visitors to Kelvingrove Museum in a single weekend in more than a decade.

The splendid 292 bone structure, now replete as an impressive 21.3 meter long diplodocus cast, is on show until 6 May 2019. Admission is free and you do not require a ticket to visit, although people are being asked to leave a little extra time to see Dippy, especially at weekends and during school holidays.

Dippy’s visit to Glasgow is the only Scottish stop on an eight city UK wide tour. Dippy on Tour: A Natural History Adventure is being brought to Kelvingrove Museum and visitors across the UK by the Natural History Museum, London in partnership with the Garfield Weston Foundation, and supported by Dell EMC and Williams & Hill.

Chair of Glasgow Life, Councillor David McDonald, said: ‘Dippy, the Natural History Museum’s iconic dinosaur, now stands resplendent in Kelvingrove Museum. Over the weekend Dippy greeted an incredible 24,000 plus visitors as they entered the main hall. That’s our busiest Saturday and Sunday for over a decade. From the feedback we’ve received so far he has certainly impressed his Scottish audience.

‘At Glasgow Museums we are always striving to put on world class exhibitions, alongside our standing collection, and its clear Dippy has captured the public’s imagination. Dippy is free to visit, but with so many fans keen to see him we would ask visitors to consider using public transport to get to Kelvingrove Museum and to allow a little extra time for their trip.’

Dippy on a mission to inspire five million natural history adventures and encourage families to explore nature on their doorstep. Glasgow Museums will use Dippy’s visit, together with a supporting public and schools programme, to showcase the city’s natural history collection and stunning local natural habitats.
