Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) is best known as a sculptor and architect. (He designed the marble colonnade in front of the Vatican.) This lecture will focus on his sculptures which are some of the greatest works in marble and bronze in the history of European art.
Brendan Cassidy gained his MA from Edinburgh University and his PhD from Cambridge. He has taught art history at Cambridge, London, Princeton and St Andrews, and lectures to academic and other audiencies in the UK, the rest of Europe and the USA. His publications include: Politics, Civic Ideals and Sculpture in Italyl c. 1240-1400 (2007), Studies in the Illustration of the Psalter (ed. with Rosemary Muir Wrigth, 2000) and Iconography at the Crossroads (ed. 1992). He has also published numerous articles in British, American, Italian and German art journals.
COSTS:
Our membership fee for our 2023/24 lecture series is £55 for a single membership and £100 for joint membership.
Other events are optional extras.
All are welcome.
Visitors to a lecture are invited to leave a suggested donation of £8.
Complimentary teas and coffees are served after lectures.
