MTV has stopped showing music videos, but a new film festival in Edinburgh is stepping in to save the day!
Wild Song Film Fest promises a night of the best local and international music videos, with a full lineup including Franz Ferdinand, Courtney Barnett, Bonnie "Prince" Billy and more.
The inaugural event will shine a spotlight on Edinburgh's own star music video director Rianne White, whose first directing job was at the King's Theatre Edinburgh at age 15, and now directs acclaimed music videos for international superstar acts. Wild Song will feature 5 of Rianne's music videos:
• Franz Ferdinand "Night or Day"
• Young Fathers "LORD"
• AURORA "Apple Tree"
• Black Country, New Road "Besties"
• Lucia & The Best Boys "When You Dress Up"
Also featured will be Ben Berman, acclaimed US director known for his work on "Tim and Eric." Wild Song will feature 3 of Berman's videos for Bonnie "Prince" Billy:
• "I See a Darkness" filmed on the streets of Glasgow
• "Quail and Dumplings" an epic pacific island adventure
• "The Curse" filmed in New Orleans with youth artists The Roots of Music
The festival will feature 2 wildly creative one-take videos from Ewan Jones Morris:
• A delightful toy train journey for Scottish genre-defying artist Anna Meredith's "Paramour"
• A wonderfully trippy journey into "memory champion" Ben Pridmore's "memory palace" for DJ Shadow's "Scale it Back"
Fans of Australian artist Courtney Barnett will enjoy her video for "Sight Unseen" featuring Waxahatchee, a beautiful and unique video made by visual artist sisters Juliana and Nicola of Giraffe Studios.
In addition to Young Fathers, some of Edinburgh's top musical talent will be showcased, with videos from indie rocker Hamish Hawk, rising pop star Rachel White, and young drag queen Cherry West.
The festival will also present the world premiere of the new video for Gareth Overton's new single "Getting Over Going Under" which he wrote for the Wild Song songwriting challenge last month. Gareth won the competition, and his prize was a recording session at Edinburgh's idyllic Sound Sound recording studio, plus a fully commissioned music video for his new song, to premiere at Wild Song Film Fest.
The Wild Song songwriting challenge and film festival are created by husband and wife producers Sam Goldblatt and Louise E. Knowles, who run the 48 Hour Film Project, Scotland's biggest filmmaking event, with 200 films created each year.
Wild Song will feature 2 music videos made as part of the 48 Hour Film Project, Grant Deans' comedy horror "Killer Moves" and Chris Mclellan's hilarious "Raprimand" in which an office disciplinary turns into a rap battle.
Audiences are encouraged to join in the Cameo Bar from 7pm for live music, followed by the screening at 8pm. After the screening, audiences will get to vote for their favourites, and awards will be presented live in cinema.
Wild Song is proudly supported by legendary record shop Thorne Records, who are providing a £50 gift certificate to the winning music video.
Producers Sam Goldblatt explained the inspiration for the new festival, saying, "I grew up with MTV and I used to worship music videos. Now all I see is little bits and bobs on my phone. I want all the 90s kids, and everyone of all ages, to join us and celebrate incredible music videos together as a shared experience."
