The book is available now through the Scottish Gallery website and will be launched at the Gallery from 5 to 28 February 2026 with a small, focussed exhibition entitled In Focus.
James Morrison: Under a Northern Sky brings together a deeply personal selection of the artist’s landscape works, charting the distinctive vision that defined his long career. Starting in Glasgow and moving across the Scottish landscape, vast northern skies and remote wildernesses, Morrison created paintings that have become part of the national imagination. This new publication is both a tribute to the artist as well as a testament to the enduring beauty and drama of Scotland itself.
As part of the exhibition programme, Professor John Morrison, art historian and author, will give a special lecture in the Gallery exploring his father’s life, artistic development, and legacy – details of events can be found at scottish-gallery.co.uk
Christina Jansen, Managing Director of The Scottish Gallery and founder of The Scottish Gallery Press, says: “We are delighted to launch this book. There has been growing demand for a deeper understanding of James Morrison’s enduring landscape practice and we have not been able to keep up with the demand for publications on his work. Since the release of Anthony Baxter’s documentary Eye of the Storm in 2021, new audiences from around the world have been drawn to Morrison’s work and to the shores of Scotland. This book is a fitting tribute to an artist whose vision defined a generation.”
The beautifully illustrated book invites audiences to marvel at the development of the artist, to engage with the landscape of Scotland and to enjoy reading texts written and edited by John Morrison and Guy Peploe.
