FROM Bowie and The Boss to Tina Turner, Oasis, and Taylor Swift’s record-breaking 2024 takeover, Scottish Gas Murrayfield has hosted some of the biggest shows Scotland has ever seen – and fans have had their say on the standouts.
As part of the stadium’s centenary, Scottish Rugby’s Murrayfield Memories campaign invited supporters to share the moments that made the place special – from Calcutta Cups and Grand Slams to once-in-a-lifetime gigs.
Laura Tinch, Scottish Rugby heritage lead, said: “Everyone knows Scottish Gas Murrayfield for rugby, but the concerts here have been just as unforgettable. From Tina Turner to Beyoncé, AC/DC to Take That – and last year’s Taylor Swift record-breakers – hundreds of thousands have made memories on this ground. I know I’m biased, but Murrayfield nights really are amongst the best gigs anywhere in the world. ”
Based on fan memories shared with the campaign, here are six of the most iconic concerts to light up the national stadium:
1) Taylor Swift – The Eras Tour (June 2024)
Demand was so big capacity had to be increased as 73,000 people per night packed into the largest stadium gigs in Scottish history. The city turned glitter-pink as fans swapped friendship bracelets and belted out Love Story, Cruel Summer, and more across three sold-out nights. Swift’s impact on Edinburgh stretched far beyond the stadium, with hotels sold out, streets packed, and even restaurants changing their name in honour of the biggest pop star in the world.
2) David Bowie – Serious Moonlight Tour (June 1983)
The gig that kicked it all off and proved Murrayfield could do megastar shows. Heroes, Life on Mars? and Let’s Dance – a landmark night that set the template for the stadium’s concert future in front of 47,444 of the luckiest music fans in Scottish history.
3) R.E.M. – Monster World Tour (1995)
Close to 50,000 fans turned out to see the legendary US indie band in 1995, and the gig remains a fan favourite 30 years on. Irish rockers The Cranberries provided support ahead of an era-defining set including Losing My Religion and Everybody Hurts.
4) Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band (2023)
Another sell-out crowd packed Murrayfield for a multi-generational, high-energy masterclass. Dancing in the Dark, I’m on Fire and Born in the U.S.A. turned Murrayfield into a mass singalong. Reviewers called it “mammoth” – fans agreed.
5) Tina Turner – Wildest Dreams Tour (1996)
The Queen of Rock ’n’ Roll in full flight. A powerhouse, hit-stuffed spectacle – The Best, Nutbush City Limits, Private Dancer and more – and a benchmark for stadium stardust that many still say hasn’t been topped.
6) Oasis – Reunion Tour (August 2025)
A gig so big it shook the ground. The Gallagher Brothers return to Murrayfield 25 years on from the Standing on the Shoulders of Giants tour was literally seismic. The British Geological Survey recorded measurable seismic activity during the band’s three-night comeback - the most “earth-shaking” concerts Edinburgh has seen in decades.
Launched for Scottish Gas Murrayfield’s centenary year – which was marked in the Autumn Test Match with New Zealand on Saturday – Murrayfield Memories has seen hundreds of fans submit their personal memories of the famous stadium – from matchdays and club finals to concerts and community events – helping to tell the human story of Scottish Gas Murrayfield over 100 years.
