Cooking on gas - Edinburgh care home chef makes the finals of national competition
Iain Young, Head Chef at Care UK’s Murrayside, off Corstophine Road, has been named as a finalist in the National Association of Care Catering’s ‘Care Chef of the Year’ competition, where he will take part in a cook-off against 12 other talented care chefs from across the UK.
The National Association of Care Catering (NACC) recognises those working in and associated with catering in the UK care sector. Previous winners in the NACC Awards, Murrayside has been praised for ensuring that residents dine with dignity, have plenty of choice, and are served great food that looks, tastes and is of the same standard as fine dining.
After taking part in regional heats, 12 care chefs from across the country, including Iain, will now go head-to-head to impress the judges, hoping to claim the coveted title of NACC Care Chef of the Year 2021.
Iain said: “I am delighted to have made it to the finals of the NACC Care Chef of the Year. Myself and the team work incredibly hard to ensure residents enjoy nutritious, delicious food that’s beautifully presented - and to be recognised for this feels incredible.
“Before working in the care sector, I worked in 5-star hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants, where I learnt so many skills that benefit my work at Murrayside. We strive to ensure residents’ lives are as fulfilling as possible through food, whether that’s adapting popular dishes so that they’re easier to consume, or hosting a summer BBQ for families to enjoy.
“I’m looking forward to competing in the finals – fingers crossed I win!”
Fran Long, Home Manager at Murrayside, added: “We’re delighted that Iain has made it to the finals of the NACC’s Care Chef of the Year competition, and it’s testament to his level of skill and commitment to bringing fine dining to residents.
“Here at Murrayside, Iain and his team go above and beyond to ensure residents have a selection of nutritious, tasty meals each day, and can dine with dignity. We often see Iain chatting to residents about their favourite dishes and then recreating them for the menu – he really does go above and beyond to ensure everyone is catered for.
“I’d like to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to Iain and the catering team for all they do. The Murrayside family is incredibly proud of your achievements, and we are all rooting for you to win!”
