The Italian Institute of Culture in Edinburgh is pleased to present Italian Clapperboard, a curated series of six powerful contemporary Italian documentaries screening throughout 2026.
Spanning themes from climate activism and environmental change to migration, memory, identity, and tradition, the series offers audiences a compelling window into the social, cultural, and political questions shaping Italy today. Each film brings a distinct voice and perspective, combining personal stories with broader historical and global contexts.
Programme:
26 February 2026, 17:30 – Come se non ci fosse un domani (2025)
A striking look at the actions, hopes, and moral dilemmas of climate activists from the group Ultima Generazione.
26 March 2026, 17:30 – La prodigiosa trasformazione della classe operaia in stranieri (2025)
Director Samir blends archive material, testimonies, animation, and narration to recount the migration of millions of Italians in search of a better future.
28 May 2026, 17:30 – Breath (2025)
A moving exploration of climate change, pollution, and industrial fishing through the lived experiences of those who have seen the sea transformed.
25 June 2026, 17:30 – Lasciatemi morire ridendo (2025)
An intimate and deeply personal film following Stefano Gheller, the second person in Italy to legally obtain medically assisted suicide, opening a poignant reflection on end-of-life choices.
12 November 2026, 17:30 – Carne et Ossa (2024)
In Pacentro, Abruzzo, men take part in the ancient and physically demanding Corsa degli Zingari, a ritual race rooted in the enduring bond between humanity and nature.
10 December 2026, 17:30 – Dacia, vita mia – Dialoghi giapponesi (2025)
A film recalling writer Dacia Maraini’s childhood in Kyoto during World War II, when her family was interned after refusing loyalty to the Republic of Salò.
All films are in Italian with English subtitles.
