There must have been a moment, at the beginning, where we could have said - no. But somehow we missed it.'
First staged at the Edinburgh Fringe in 1966, Tom Stoppard's absurdist tragicomedy is a show about questions - though reluctant to grant us answers. In this worm's-eye view of Shakespeare's 'Hamlet,' the spotlight finds two ill-fated and unimportant characters, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, as they fumble their way through the world of the play, accompanied by the enigmatic Player and his troupe of Tragedians.
If ‘all the world’s a stage,’ 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern' situates itself firmly in the wings, as our hapless double act find themselves rudderless, desperately confused, and with no memory of their lives before their summons. 'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead' is the hilarious, anarchical heir to one of the greatest tragedies of all time, grappling with our ideas of purpose, performance, identity, and free will, and ultimately asking us: heads or tails?
'Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead' is the debut production from GUTTER. Theatre, a new Edinburgh-based theatre collective.
The show’s runtime is 2hrs 45 mins, with two intervals of 10 minutes each.
