Lady Joyce Caplan will chair the event, for which Lakshmi Puri, the author, is flying in for the day.
Puri was an Indian diplomat for 28 years (including Ambassador to Hungary), then a UN diplomat for 15 yrs, rising to Asst Sec-Gen of the UN - and, separately, Deputy Director of UN Women, the largest organisation in the world that works for women's advancement.
Her debut novel, "Swallowing the Sun" is about a young girl who fights patriarchy and casteism, growing up, falling in love, during the turbulent and transformative first half of the 20th century, and joining the Indian national movement for independence from the British colonial government.
So, a romantic-historical-literary novel.
Has already won 5 book awards, is being translated into 5 languages, and has been signed up for a multi-film series.
So why Edinburgh to initiate the international launch? Why now?
Because most people nowadays don't have any idea of how closely the two countries shaped each other in the past, and the new Free Trade Agreement between the UK and India now provides a historic moment to review and rebuild on that relationship. What better than a terrific novel to motivate and energise that?
So can you participate?
Possibly! If there are seats still available! Please contact John Oakes on johnloakes.oakes@gmail.com or 07791 248 509
