Romeo & Juliet

About Romeo & Juliet

I DREAMT MY LADY CAME AND FOUND ME DEAD //
STRANGE DREAM, THAT GIVES A DEAD MAN LEAVE TO THINK

You see there’s two families - the bourgeois type. They’ve been powerful influences on a city for centuries — that’s how they have their money, and why they hate their opposites. A prince regulates the violence - mental and physical that they can inflict on one another.

Boys fight in the street regardless of their class to protect their names. They would shed blood to save face. One of them isn’t like that, he sits alone in the woods often. He thinks often of death.

In the other family home, there’s a girl. She’s cleverer than her family, and often speaks to herself. She’s not yet a woman, but her family want her to marry a man. She feels trapped and desires to live.

The boy and the girl meet at a party. They speak of God then kiss. In a few days, they’ll be dead.

The Edinburgh University Shakespeare Company present a new production of Romeo & Juliet — Shakespeare’s eternal tract on violent love and loving hate. A play of oppositions and how they tangle. On the inextricable relationship between love and death. On wise children and stupid adults. An astonishing blend of Shakespeare’s bawdy and high tragedy.
