Jaggy Edina presents
The Rhinestone Cowboy
The smile can hide all the pain…
Following on from a sold out debut at Leith Depot, Jaggy Edina Productions present 'The Rhinestone Cowboy' atj Summerhall on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th February at 7pm
A brand new play co-written by Leith-based poet Hjarta and musician Harry Bongo which brings the life of one young man’s tumultuous journey from Scotland to Iceland in a provoking one-woman show.
A hard-hitting raw and emotive production exposing the ravages of the effects of schizophrenia, based on a true story and written by real-life mother and son Heidi and Harry Docherty. ‘The Rhinestone Cowboy’ is a blistering road trip from Auld Reekie to the Land of Fire and Ice. With a pulsating electronic score featuring music from contemporary artists from Scotland and Iceland and diverse original sound design by Harry Bongo, the score delivers a visceral, high-octane backdrop to a razor-sharp reflection of a chameleon-like life, captured by a provoking, bold backdrop of visual projections.
‘Rhinestone’ was written as a tribute to the lead character, Dan Theman. Dan The Man. A young man with a glittering start to his new life in a bold new country who tragically succumbed to the demons that lived in his head. This play poses the question:
Why is suicide still a taboo subject? Should we be allowed to make the choice to take our own life if we are living a life of pain, even if it means leaving behind a wave of grief? How do we support those who feel it is the one way to peace?
The writer, Hjarta, has collaborated with a Scottish mental health charity, Change, to learn more about the effects of schizophrenia that sufferers face on a day-to-day basis.
She says: “We hope that the play delivers not only a unique and relevant perspective of what it may be like to suffer from schizophrenia and psychotic episodes, but that it also raises the stark issue of suicide in young men in our society – across borders and countries.”
Harry Bongo is a Leith-based music and sound artist working across recorded, visual and interactive mediums as well as live electro-acoustic performance. Blending minimalism, electronica, post-rock, and improvisatory processes, he creates atmospheric, narrative-driven music and evolving soundscapes that invite reflective, immersive listening shaped by interaction with technology, environment, and audience. His music has accompanied award-winning documentaries, short films, and interdisciplinary collaborations.
Harry Bongo and Hjarta previously collaborated on her filmed poem ‘Persevere – Here’, a love letter to Leith.
