Colour is often perceived as the ‘main event’, but tone underpins the structure of any drawing or painting and plays a big part in the sense of atmosphere of the work.
‘Chiaroscuro” (Italian for “light-dark”) refers to the dramatic use of light and shadow to create a sense of depth and volume in a painting or drawing.
In this workshop we will focus on recognising the tonal values inherent in colour, culminating in creating a still life painting in oils that emphasises and exploits the drama of chiaroscuro.
The first day will be spent on making small acrylic monochrome studies exploring the possibilities and effects of different tonal ranges within a work. On the second day, using oils and a full colour palette, we will produce a small painting.
Artists we will be looking at will include masters like Caravaggio, Rembrandt as well as more contemporary artists like Frank Auerbach and Graham Crowley.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
