Needle-felting Birds Workshop – Paint with Wool & Create Textile Art
Discover the Joy of Needle-felting
Join us for a Needlefelting Birds Workshop and learn the relaxing art of needle-felting – also known as dry felting or painting with wool. Using soft, lustrous merino wool tops in glowing colours and special barbed needles, you’ll gently layer fibres into a backing fabric to create your very own bird design. It’s a bit like painting by numbers – but with wool! (learn more via the International Feltmakers Association)
Once your bird picture is complete, you can add finishing touches with hand embroidery or even try free-motion embroidery by machine to give extra detail and texture.
Who is this workshop for?
This textile art class is suitable for beginners and experienced makers alike. Needle-felting is extremely calming and mindful, making it a wonderful alternative if you’ve found wet-felting too physical or tiring. All levels are welcome – no drawing or sewing skills required!
What you’ll learn
During this hands-on workshop, you’ll discover:
How to transfer your chosen design to the backing fabric
The correct way to hold and use barbed felting needles
Techniques for layering and blending merino wool fibres to build up colour
How to add texture using yarns and stitches
Options for enhancing your work with hand embroidery
Course arrangements
Everything you need is provided – all felting materials, tools, and inspiration images. You can also bring your own picture (A5 size works best). Many participants love recreating a favourite bird, pet, or flower in wool!
Why join the needlefeting birds workshop?
Needle-felting is more than a craft – it’s a mindful, creative escape that lets you switch off, slow down, and create something beautiful. By the end of the workshop, you’ll leave with a unique needle-felted bird picture to treasure.
Needlefelting Birds workshop is part of our wider programme of Creative Textiles Workshops, where you can explore hand or machine embroidery, print-making, mixed-media textiles and more.
