A murder dredges up a distorted, traumatic and long-buried past for former undercover police officer turned LAPD detective Erin Bell.
Karyn Kusama has to begin to be taken seriously as one of the greatest American filmmakers of the 21st century. In Destroyer she has collaboratively crafted one of the most affecting and devastating crime dramas to ever have come out of Hollywood.
On the surface it is another cat-and-mouse heist film with undercover cops infiltrating a well-oiled gang of thieves (think Point Break). However, thanks to stupendous performances across the cast, the film uses this well-worn genre to explore the immutability of time and the irrevocable consequences of our actions, in a way that makes the drama and the high stakes really count and brutally hurt.
