Pianist-composer Cedar Walton was a major contributor to the jazz tradition. He came to prominence as a member of drummer Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, where he brought tunes including his now classic Ugetsu to the band book. He went on to become the house pianist at Prestige Records, recording with saxophonists Sonny Criss and Charles McPherson and guitarist Pat Martino.
He also worked with singers Abbey Lincoln and Etta James, trumpeter Lee Morgan and saxophonist George Coleman and composed jazz standards including Mosaic, Bolivia, Holy Land and Mode for Joe.
The Playtime team welcome pianist Tom Gibbs to pay tribute to Walton alongside saxophonist Martin Kershaw, bassist Mario Caribe and drummer Tom Bancroft.
