Indelible melodies, brilliantly creative improvisation, reflective soundscapes and grooving music with a real energetic lift.
Sao Paolo-born bassist Mario Caribé has been a major presence on the Scottish music scene since he moved here to study in 1996. He has worked with the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra and klezmer adventurers Moishe’s Bagel, as well as playing innumerable sideman dates across a spectrum of styles, and his latest band, Fret complements outfits including Boteco Trio and the Crusaders Time Machine.
Inspired by Bass Desires, the group bassist Marc Johnson formed with guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield, Fret mixes fiery attack with considered compositions and strong rhythmic underpinning.
Guitarists Graeme Stephen and Kevin Mackenzie are distinctive musical personalities with a similar sense of enquiry to the Frisell-Scofield axis while the understanding that Caribé and drummer Tom Bancroft have developed over the years with the Playtime cooperative supports and propels as the music requires.
