Why it wasn't always a good thing if your husband brought you chocolate...
The Great Pox was rarely talked about in the 19th century, but its impact was everywhere. Primarily sexually transmitted, it’s devastating effects could last a lifetime, leading to the saying “One night with Venus, a lifetime with Mercury”. Human Remains Conservator Cat Irving will talk about the history of this dreaded disease, what it does to the body and how the treatments could often be worse than the disease itself.
This lecture is part of a series that offers an insight into everything that was traditionally kept behind closed doors. The Sextorical Lectures run on the last Friday of the month at Gladstone's Land and feature experts and academics talking about the history of sex, intimacy and other related topics.
