Between 1803 and 1853 Scottish women were ‘transported beyond seas’ mainly to Van Diemen’s Land, now Tasmania, mainly for committing crimes of petty theft.
Come along to this Women’s History Cafe and hear the stories of these women, often young from across Scotland and their three month journeys in transports or convict ships.
We’ll also uncover what happened to them once they disembarked in Hobart and were marched to the Cascades Female Factory, a workhouse and prison and how they were assigned to domestic service in local households to serve their seven year sentences.
Also there’s a chance to look at some of the existing documents and records that help to uncover and piece together these remarkable but hidden women’s stories.
Where possible we will update our listings to notify of cancelled, postponed and rescheduled events, however we STRONGLY ADVISE that you check with the venue/organiser in the first instance for updates.
