This exhibition is the first Edinburgh Printmakers Members’ Show to take place at Castle Mills. It reflects the solace our members have found in the arts over the past 18 months, and the beauty of a form which provides deep satisfaction and joy for both makers and audiences. The pandemic has been a challenging time for artistic production, especially for forms such as printmaking which require studio-based processes. Some members have produced at home using alternative work-arounds, others returned to the studio when we were able to re-open for them post lock-down. With work spanning print on paper, textiles and ceramics, ‘SOLACE’ culminates our programming for 2021, as we celebrate the work of our members over the last two years and the return of our studio into production mode.
Hung across Gallery 1 and 2, synergies and overlapping themes have emerged reflecting parallels across the work of the 60 members on show: from window views, close contemplations of domestic interiors and walks outdoors, to the prominence of the colour blue, and the escapism of abstract experimentation. Work has been displayed to share these shared themes, alongside a kinship in colour palettes and forms of mark-making.
