The dilemma of authenticity

The Scottish Renaissance (much of the 1500s through to the mid-1600s) was a period of flourishing artistic expression. Today we have the good fortune to enjoy our shared inheritance: a collection of highly decorated interiors in properties throughout the country. These colourful interiors have a distinctive national style, whilst sharing a striking similarity to others in France, Scandinavia and the Baltic States. This lecture describes some recent discoveries, as well as the challenges facing conservators in caring for and displaying these rare survivals in the 21st century.
