About Exhibition ‘ReCollect’
The August exhibition ‘ReCollect’ features ceramic artist Kerstin Gren and painter Sam Cartman. The title of the exhibition ‘ReCollect’ reflects upon the process of both artists. Kerstin collects natural pigments and prepares them for painting onto ceramics. Sam’s inspiration comes from visiting an architectural structure in a specific rural place, and the recollection of that memory turns into a semi-abstract painting.
Sam relocated to Scotland shortly after completing his art education and has developed and matured as an artist in Scotland. His works are unmistakably influenced by Scottish rural landscapes and singular structures, depicting in an abstract way space, big skies, distant horizons, and lines merging into the horizon. Sam's paintings are a response to being in the landscape: they are shaped by the experience of being in a certain place at a certain time and the memory of this. Rich ochres dominate the paintings in this exhibition, bringing to mind ripe wheat fields and ‘mature’ summer landscapes.
Originally from Sweden, Kerstin moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2004. She forages and prepares all paints and pigments she is using. She fires in a method that corresponds with her idea, and that is usually Raku or Smoke Firing. ‘When you take a closer look at the things I make, you can see my surroundings. One could say that the things I make are decorated with places.’ – Kerstin Gren
