The International Festival’s 2021 orchestral concerts come to a conclusion with Edinburgh’s own Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by eminent Japanese maestro Kazushi Ono.
Respected for his vivid musical storytelling in both the opera house and on the concert stage, Ono directs two works of gentle sonic magic from his own country, alongside two established classics paying affectionate tribute to the music of earlier times.
Ravel looks back to the musical glories of the French Baroque in the elegant dances of his exquisite Le tombeau de Couperin, dedicated to friends who lost their lives in the Great War. While Ravel offers poignant remembrance, Prokofiev sets out to surprise and entertain in his dashing Classical Symphony.
Beforehand, discover two evocative Japanese pieces inspired by the fragile beauty of the natural world and brought to vivid life in Ono’s incisive direction. Toru Takemitsu’s joyful Tree Line conjures the sounds of Japanese musical instruments from within a western orchestra, while Toshio Hosokawa’s Blossoming II (commissioned by the International Festival in 2011) is a delicate contemplation of the Buddhist symbol of the lotus flower.
