Ever dream of trading in the fast-paced city life for rolling rural landscapes, the tranquility of island life and the remote farmland lifestyle? Meet the man who did just that.
After moving permanently to Orkney, the island he's always dreamed of, Richard Clubley presents his experiences of trading city life for retired island life, the island's 'northness, island-ness and 'end-of-the-line' feel'.
In this event, the launch for his third book Orkney: A Special Way of Life, Richard will discuss the traits of Orkney life, how people make up 'lifestyle packages' which often include several part-time jobs. Looking at how the highs - wildlife, scenery, weather and modern facilities - outweigh such lows as local council decisions and hospital waiting lists, all of this combines into a love letter to Orkney, his fascination with and love of the island that led to the decision to put down roots there, accompanied by stunning images.
RICHARD CLUBLEY was born by the sea in East Yorkshire. His first island encounter was with the thin ruckle of stones exposed on the Withernsea beach at very low tides that they called Stoney Island. Richard caught the incurable island fever and in 2017, Richard, his wife Bev and their dog moved to live in Orkney, having bought a plot of land overlooking Scapa Flow and built a house. He is now a regular contributor to Scottish Islands Explorer and www.Orkney.com. Over the course of his adult life, he has explored around 90 (so far) of the Scottish islands.
