Tune-Yards was formed by Merrill Garbus in 2006 and has since been synonymous with progressive music and an explosive performance style. The band’s songs unfold in a surprising way and their music is very danceable, underpinned by the connections Garbus makes between song and social consciousness. The Oakland-based musician, alongside her trusted collaborator, bassist Nate Brenner, spent 2019 recording and sampling themselves without the time pressure of working within a professional studio. Ditching computer screens for live instruments brought them a freedom that was like ‘stirring up a big pot of creativity’ and after weeks of musical exploration, full songs emerged.
From this re-ignited creative spark comes the songs that make up Tune-Yards' fifth studio album, sketchy.. This has been accompanied by appearances on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert that saw Garbus play keyboard surrounded by a colourful mountain of bean bags and a performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live, where the singer revisited her roots as a puppeteer. Prior to sketchy.’s release, Garbus and Brenner wrote the film score for the 2018 dark comedy, Sorry to Bother You, starring Lakeith Stanfield. The duo also reflected on race, politics, intersectional feminism and the environment in their 2017 studio album, I can feel you creep into my private life.
