A strange and exciting art rock four-piece, black midi’s 2019 debut album Schlagenheim scooped a Mercury nomination, and was followed up by this year’s Cavalcade. The Londoners have received much hype for their improvisational, surreal stylings and recently branched out into jamming over spoken-word readings on NTS Radio’s The Black Midi Variety Hour.
The band formed in 2017 after members met while attending London’s BRIT School, an arts and music academy that counts Adele, amongst others, as graduates. Singer-guitarist Geordie Greep, drummer Morgan Simpson, bassist-keyboard player Cameron Picton and guitarist Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin each bring their own diverse backgrounds as musicians to black midi. Their International Festival set promises to be as energetic and excellent as the hype suggests.
