Fossils are the remains of ancient plants and animals which have turned to stone and you don’t need to go far to find them in Edinburgh. Loads of the buildings and pavements in the city are made of sedimentary rocks like limestone, slate and sandstone. These are the best kinds of rocks for finding fossils which means you can see them in the walls and flagstones right here in Edinburgh. Follow Dynamic Earth’s self-guided walking trail using the link below for some good places to start looking but there are hundreds more places to look throughout the city. So grab a notebook and a magnifying glass and use our handy fossil hunters guide to start hunting! If you do find any new fossils take a photo and tag Dynamic Earth on social media to be in with a chance of winning our fossil hunter’s prize at the end of the festival!
