Miss Juneteenth (2020)

To coincide with the ‘Juneteenth’ freedom celebrations in the US, we are screening this award-winning feature debut from Channing Godfrey Peoples. Miss Juneteenth tells the story of Turquoise Jones (Nicole Beharie), a Texan single mother and former Miss Juneteenth pageant winner. Having had her life rerouted by her pregnancy, Turquoise wants her teen daughter Kai (Alexis Chika- eze) to win this pageant, enabling her to get its life-changing college scholarship. Warmly received by critics and audiences, Miss Juneteenth was one of the best films of 2020 and didn’t manage to get a theatrical release in the UK thanks to the Covid pandemic.
