This incredibly moving reimagining of Tom Junod’s journalistic piece on beloved children’s TV presenter Fred ‘Mr.’ Rogers, was one of the standout films of 2019.
For a certain generation of children in America, Mr. Rogers (Tom Hanks) was an avuncular fixture of their television viewing, as his whimsical TV show helped so many of them navigate some of the trickier issues of growing up. Heller turns to Hollywood icon Tom Hanks, to play a man who seemingly has no angle or filter, but never talks down to children. However, the real revelation here is Matthew Rhys who gives a performance of spiky anger, resentment and genuine hurt, worthy of an Oscar.
