The Assistant (2019)
Documentary maker Kitty Green makes her fiction feature debut with this deeply unsettling and absolutely vital intervention into the current debates around sexual harassment and inappropriate behaviour in the contemporary office space. Eschewing much of the sensational and shocking headline behaviours of the likes of Harvey Weinstein, Green instead focuses upon how micro-aggressions, institutional chauvinism and a policy of silence play out in the corporate production offices of a powerful producer.
Rising Hollywood star Julia Garner (Electrick Children, Grandma, Ozark) gives a remarkable performance of quiet disillusionment as the new production assistant Jane. Subjected to a disorienting array of inappropriate behaviours, from the expectation that she should clean up after others to the coercive institutional pressure to look the other way, Jane is a near-perfect portrait of how difficult it is to exist with integrity in a toxic working environment.
NOTE: Features references to sexually abusive behaviour
