Anchored in stories of dissolving, shifting and stillness: far out to sea, where land-based networks begin to crackle and skip on the boundaries of their limited existence, our lonesome sailor sits, motionless at first, then rising slowly. Created during the National Arts Festival of South Africa in a project called Virtual Blackout that experimented with the form of theatre making during national lockdown.

CRAIG LEO is a theatre designer, puppeteer and performing artist, who has worked with a range of top South African theatre makers, including a wide range of productions with Handspring Puppet Company. He is Associate Director of Puppetry for War Horse with the National Theatre. Most recently Craig designed and directed the puppetry for Elliot Harper’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, directed by Sally Cookson for Leeds Playhouse and the Bridge Theatre in London.
MEGHAN JUDGE makes research and experimentally driven pieces that allow for encounters between animations, installations and sound. Her works generally experiment with time. They often condense into moods and atmospheres that allow for the thickening of the present moment in ways that question hegemonic knowing. Currently, Meghan is working with the ocean as a theme for exploring beyond the limits of human power. She is a PhD fellow for the Oceanic Humanities in the Global South project at WiSER, Wits University.
UKWANDA PUPPETS & DESIGN ART COLLECTIVE was formed in 2010, and since its inception has grown into a collective of young artists, with a core group consisting of Luyanda Nogodlwana, head designer, performer, puppeteer and puppet maker; and Sipho Ngxola, puppet maker, designer, performer and puppeteer. The company has received multiple awards for their productions and puppetry work. In 2020, Ukwanda has been working on a collaborative production with Augsburg Staatsteater in Germany, which has been postponed owing to Covid-19 and will resume in 2021.
